In my previous blog (breaking the ”news as a commodity” mold), I mentioned about how much noise there is in social media as a consequence of loads of information and news. Last week our Technology Immersion teacher Enrique Dans introduced us Luistxo Fernandez one of the creators of Niagarank, which simply aggregates the most popular news, in other means works as a content curation online platform.
What is content curation?
A term that describes the act of finding, grouping, organizing or sharing the best and most relevant content on a specific issue (check out). Niagarank works exactly in this sense.
Niagarank team follow thousands of Twitter accounts. It is necessary that these accounts are linked to an URL and relevance to the categories they offer (basketball, cinema, arts etc.) The most newsworthy twits and news of the day is being selected by an automated service which aggregates news. The ‘curation’ process starts with the algorithm of the site ranking the users and ends with the aggregation of the most interesting topics.
Are there similar websites?
Digg and Reddit.
Though, the news are related to Spain and the detects all the tweets in Basque language, the Niagarank team aims to reach out to FB, Google Plus and expand overseas. I find the website quite interesting since it helps to save time, stay up to date and find the most hot topics of the day. I highly recommend you to check it out.
